FUTURE OF SOLIDARITY: Susan Supercharged

Solidarity of Sky by Susan Supercharged

A concept I often reflect upon is if we as artists, are generous or supportive
enough of each other? To me this the ultimate definition of solidarity.
The function of the artist is to express, guide and set an example these of
concepts as ways of thinking, acts of strength and inspiration for others.
A toolkit for life. To give something of yourself, your deepest emotions,
your heart , selflessly to an audience. No artist is better than another,
no person is better than another.

Look up : do we not all share the same sky?
As an act of solidarity, I am taking this opportunity to share a short film
and the story behind it with you, that highlights my belief in Artist Solidarity.
On a cold and rainy night in Lockdown London, I was feeling stressed financially
and spent creatively. My thoughts overwhelmed by the lack of financial support for
artists in the UK, played heavily on my mind, as I watched all of my 2020 commissions
and all of my work sinking to the bottom of the Thames, as the lockdown continued.
Walking through the empty streets of the City of London, I was thinking of the profound
disparity of the have and have nots: so apparent in the vacant skyscrapers that once
housed the many wheelers and dealers making our economic decisions, now all shut down.
I shuffled home, forlorn, through their looming architectural shadows. Psychogeography,
my ever present friend, suddenly led me down ancient back alley tucked into a tiny
corner of glass buildings, with a view of the Gherkin.
Here, out of total surprise appeared , this breathtaking piece of artwork.
The phrase “ THE SAME FOR EVERYONE” in carnival lights shone brightly just for me.
Perfect in it’s positioning, perfect in it’s sentiment, perfect in it’s unfaltering
electric message reflected in the windows of these offices.
Every artist discovers a piece of work they wish they could have created, and this
is mine. In an act of solidarity and an
anyone who may be seeking it, I give my piece of digital space, offered to me and
my artwork , to the artist, Nathan Coley. It is my heartfelt appreciation to him,
for making my heart sing at a moment most needed and giving me hope when I gazed
the glowing phrase : “ THE SAME FOR EVERYONE”.

I hope it does the same for you. No matter what we all share the same sky , and air.
The Solidarity of Sky.
